HOST: Some rural school boards are considering a four day week. With me are parent Lena Ortiz and principal Sam Reid. LENA: As a parent who works five days, a four day week means I need childcare on the fifth day. For many families that cost cancels out any benefit. SAM: I understand that, but our teachers drive up to an hour each way. A four day week helps us keep staff. Last year we had six positions we couldn't fill. LENA: Keeping teachers matters, I agree. But longer school days are hard on young children. My son is exhausted by three o'clock already. SAM: The board's plan would use the fifth day for optional programs, like sports and tutoring, so it isn't simply a day off. LENA: Optional programs only help if there's a bus to get kids there.
