Listening Part 3 is called Listening for Information. It has 6 questions. This guide explains how it is scored, gives a plan you can use on most questions, and walks through a short example I wrote for you.
1.What the task is
Part 3 of the CELPIP General Listening test is Listening for Information. It has 6 questions. All questions are multiple choice.
The audio plays once. You cannot count on a second chance to hear a detail, so you need to catch the key information the first time.
2.How it is scored
- Each question is simply right or wrong.
- A wrong answer has no penalty. Never leave a question blank.
- The Listening skill has 38 scored items in total. Part 3 is one part of that.
- Levels 4 to 12 map one to one to CLB 4 to 12. A Listening level of 7 matches CLB 7.
3.A plan that fits most tasks
- Read before you listen. Whenever you can see the questions and answer choices, read them first. Know what information you need.
- Find the topic early. Ask yourself who is speaking, where they are and why.
- Listen for key details. Names, places, days, times, reasons and instructions are what questions often ask about.
- Watch for changes. Words like "but", "instead", "actually" and "unless" often signal a correction. The final plan is usually the answer.
- Match meaning, not words. The right choice often says the same thing in different words.
- Move on fast. If you miss a detail, choose your best answer and focus on the next question. The audio will not wait.
- Answer every question. A guess costs nothing.
4.A worked example
Script (written for this guide): "Good morning, everyone. The pottery class was meant to start Tuesday at 6:30 in the art room. But the art room is being painted this week, so we will meet in the library meeting room instead. Please bring your own apron. Clay is provided. If you cannot come, call Maria at the front desk before Monday noon."
Question 1: Where will the pottery class meet this week?
- A. In the art room
- B. In the library meeting room
- C. At the front desk
- D. In the community garden
Answer: B. The speaker first says "art room", then corrects it with "but" and "instead". The final place is the library meeting room. Choice A is the first place you hear, and it is the wrong one.
Question 2: What do students need to bring?
- A. Clay
- B. An apron
- C. A phone
- D. Lunch
Answer: B. The speaker says "bring your own apron". Clay is mentioned too, but it is provided, so you do not bring it.
5.Common mistakes
- Choosing the first detail you hear and missing the correction that follows.
- Picking a choice because it repeats words from the audio. Check that the meaning fits the question.
- Staying stuck on a missed answer and losing the next question.
- Leaving a question blank. There is no penalty for a wrong answer.
- Reading the choices too late, so you do not know what to listen for.
6.Next step
Practice with the audio playing once, as on the test. Try a free Listening for Information set. After each set, review the questions you missed and find the word or phrase that gave the answer.
